Hardware assembly of the Indigenous Language Robot

The hardware assembly consists of two parts, “The Woods” and “The Polymers”. In the sections below a step by step assembly procedure will be presented and the components required on each step will also be listed. If you feel adventurous and just want to see how the whole assembly is constructed on a mute video with an awesome demonstrator please watch carefully the video below, otherwise continue down the page.

Warning: There have been reports of some users completing the entire assembly with no instructions in less than 20 minutes!!

The Woods

You will need:

  • All The Woods found in NgOpie carrying case
  • The pins and wedges included in your polymer bag
  • Four of the M3x16mm screws included in your polymer bag
  • Four wing nuts included in your polymer bag

Follow these steps

  1. Assemble the feet and rear feet brace first
  2. Place the torso board taking care that the torso panel faces the right way (rightway = countersunk holes face the user)
  3. Find the rear braces notice that the side with the semicircular pattern clips onto the torso
  4. Fasten the torso and the rear braces together using the m3x16mm screws and the wing nuts
  5. Find the rear diagonal braces and the wooden pins. the diagonal braces will connect the feet and the rear braces
  6. Fasten them using the wooden pins and wedges as shown in the video
  7. find the head and proceed to follow the same instructions as per steps 2 and 4

Note: The pins are first used to join the parts and the wedges are used to secure them together

The Polymers

The tummy tablet and holder

You will need:

  • Lenovo tab 10 tablet
  • Tablet holder
  • Four of the M3x25mm screws included in your polymer bag
  • M2 hex key included in your polymer bag

Follow these steps

  1. Use two of the M3 screws and loosely fasten the bottom screws
  2. Place the tablet inside the holder taking care that the rear camera sits at the top and unobstructed (this is only to make sure that the orientation is correct, in fact the camera is not used in any of the robot apps)
  3. Fasten firmly the bottom screws and insert the remaining two screws

Warning: take care of not over tighten any of the screws, this can cause the embedded nuts to come loose

The head tablet and holder

You will need:

  • Lenovo tab 7 tablet
  • Tablet holder
  • Four of the M3x20mm screws included in your polymer bag
  • M2 hex key included in your polymer bag

Follow these steps

  1. Use two of the M3 screws and loosely fasten the bottom screws
  2. Place the tablet inside the holder taking care that on/off button faces the top of the robot
  3. Fasten firmly the bottom screws and insert the remaining two screws.

Warning: take care of not over tighten any of the screws, this can cause the embedded nuts to come loose

Electronics placement

You will need:

  • Ethernet cable
  • Raspberry Pi
  • Router
  • USB power supply
  • Speaker
  • Two of the M3x25mm screws included in your polymer bag
  • M2 hex key included in your polymer bag

Follow these steps

  1. Place the ethernet cable in the left most slot of the holder between the square groves
  2. Place the RaspberryPi with its USB and Ethernet terminals facing upwards in the left most slot where the ethernet cable is. Make sure that the ethernet cable is sitting inside the groves
  3. Place the router with is terminals facing down in the middle slot of the holder
  4. Place the USB power supply with the USB terminals facing up in the rightmost slot inside the holder
  5. Place the speaker with the power and USB terminal facing up inside the circular slot of the holder
  6. Flip the speaker holder up towards the tablet
  7. Secure the speaker holder using the M3x25mm screws. Fasten firmly

Warning: take care of not over tighten any of the screws, this can cause the embedded nuts to come loose

Electronics wiring

You will need:

  • 1x Ethernet cable
  • 5x USB cables
  • 1x IEC C13 power cable

Follow these steps

  1. Place the ethernet cable in the router socket
  2. Connect as you desire the USB powered-components (order does not matter)
  3. Connect USB power supply socket with the IEC C13 power cable
